A break for Miss Africa Denmark

After 4 years, the team behind Miss Africa Denmark has decided to take a break in 2010. Unfortunately this means there will be now auditions and no show this year! Other activitites continue and the website will still be updated (mainly in Danish). We will be back later with new energy and lots of fresh ideas!

Miss Africa Denmark 2009

Introduction in English

Saturday June 6th 2009 we crowned the fourth Danish Miss Africa: 19 year-old Selam Mahdi who has roots in Eritrea and Sudan. The show was a full African evening of live music, dance and celebrating all the beauty of Africa. It took place in Store Vega, the main music venue in Copenhagen.

MCs of the evening were Master Fatman & Yazzmin. They presented the participants on stage, but also great live music with Ayoe Angelica, Al Agami, Karen Mukupa and Ashimba, in his first appearance outside Tanzania.

The Miss Africa event (including this site) is in Danish. This page serves as a brief introduction in English.

The winners from 2009: Betty (1st runner-up), Selam (Miss Africa Denmark 2009) and Irene (2nd runner-up)

DKK 60,000 for Rwanda

The charity show gave a result of DKK 60,000 which has been donated to a project in Rwanda. Read about it here.

Purpose and idea

The overall purpose of the Miss Africa Denmark event is to gather all interested Africans, Danes and other friends of Africa in a celebration of the beauty and rich diversity of African culture. African culture has a lot to offer – also here in the Nordic countries. All Africans residing in Denmark has been asked to participate and we hope the event will be backed up by all.

It is important to note that Miss Africa DK is NOT a traditional model- or beauty contest. There has not been set any physical requirements to the participants, as we would instead like to focus on the power, ideas and skills of young African women.

Miss Africa is an ambassador of diversity and a positive rolemodel. She helps extend peoples knowledge of Africa, and she bridges Danish and African culture. Miss Africa has something at heart and her positive personality voices the causes that she is passionately committed to. Through the past years our previous winners has been interviewed in Danish media several times as a representative for the African community in Denmark.

The proceeds from the event in 2008 (DKK 75,000) was used to build a playground in northern Uganda together with Save the Children. The winner (Catherine) attended the official opening of the playground in March 2009. This year the proceeds will be donated to trauma treatment in Rwanda.

Please note: The organisers and performing artists affiliated with Miss Africa Denmark all work for free.
